Practical Tips for Meditation for Beginners
Meditation is easy. To know how to do meditation you need to know some tips. Once you know them, Meditation is very easy!
To learn meditation here are few tips for beginners.
Let’s sit comfortably at a quite place.
- Find a quiet place. Find yourself a nice, fresh, airy, silent, pleasant nook where you can be completely “YOU” and become unreachable to your dear doggy, cute children and all sorts of noise generating devices or people. This time is just for YOU!
- Sit in a relaxed comfortable manner. Sit in one of the meditative asanas. Alternatively, you can sit in chair asan or sofa asan if that suits you better. Beware, sofa asan has been known to lead to snore asan!
- Eliminate all external disturbances. Ensure that you haven't left any tasks undone which could make you open your eyes in the middle of meditation. Tasks such as turning off the gas knob, closing the water taps, switching off the iron. You might also want to turn off the door bell.
Beware of the nature's calls too.
- Switch off your cell phone. Do you have a cell phone? The protocol is that the cell phone meditates first and then we follow. So take your cell phone and press the red button on the cell phone.
Now, that we have established external peace, it’s time to establish inner peace as well.
Let’s close our eyes. Rest your hands on your thighs, with the palms facing the ceiling (this is called Maha mudra or receiving posture).
With a big smile on your face, take some long deep breaths in and slowly let go.
Observe the breath coming in and going out.
In case thoughts come, do not resist them. Just observe
After 10 to 12 deep breaths... open your eyes
Did you notice the number of thoughts that came to you in the last 2 minutes? Around 5, 10, 15, or more thoughts?
So how many thougths would you get on an average day?
It is important to take a break from these thoughts and rest deeply. This happens in meditation.
